When I debuted Magic Bingo™ at the 1969 Frito-Lay National Sales Meeting, the conventioneers were told, “If you win, yell ‘FRITO’, instead of ‘BINGO’. In case of a tie, the first person who yells ‘FRITO’ is the winner.” As the game was played, the players crossed off different numbers on different cards. . . but when that final number was called. .
Everyone in the entire banquet room jumped up and yelled “FRITO!” The walls vibrated, chandeliers shook, startled waiters dropped their trays, and the front desk sent security to see what had happened. Five hundred people yelling the same word at the same time was the loudest sound ever heard in the hotel! There was a moment of shocked silence, followed by enthusiastic laughter and backslapping, as the meeting was transformed into a dynamic celebration with an air of camaraderie not there before. Then Frito Lay’s President delivered his final speech. Later, an executive told me: “The tremendous reception our president received was worth far more than Frito Lay paid you for the entire meeting.”
